I made this short doco with my niece Vanessa just over a year ago.
I’ve revisited it in light of the recent tragic sinking of an asylum seeker boat off Java to see whether it still has relevance in light of the usual rubbish that serves as public debate on this issue every time a juicy media opp like this emerges. As you can see, it is still getting comments and I have an awful feeling that 30 Dislikes and 22 Likes is pretty indicative of public opinion. I think its really interesting to see the crap some people write by way of response to the facts – at least what they were then.
I don’t really think for a moment that most of the people that write “sink em” etc really believe that, or would have the courage to actually do it, but it does show the level of ignorance and bigotry that exists out there in our so-called free country. I am often tempted to argue, “You can say what you want as long as you’re not an idiot…” But, I know that’s not PC for a libertarian.
This doco has been/is being used by migrant centres (freely with my permission) to let them know that not everyone in this country wants to push their heads under the water until they don’t come up again…
Pic: Was taken secretly and smuggled out of Curtin Detention Centre I think about 18 months/2 years ago. It shows a refugee being “quietened down” by an employee paid with out taxes. Edifying it isn’t.
